While a war ravages her country, a mother will do anything for her child not to awake to the ravages that life brings. With The Child Dreams, Hanoch Levin thinks on the arbitrariness of life, its dilemmas within and the hope for a messiah to stop time. woken'glacier is a company of international theatre artists dedicated to creating new and introducing unfamiliar theatrical pieces which expose the many forms of abuse found both socially and politically in the world around us. Our process is a revolving collaboration between actor, director and writer, which synthesizes the methods of Stanislavsky with more physical/non-linear techniques of Viewpoints, Martial Arts and Suzuki. In the spirit of this mission, we are interested in giving a voice to the provocative and powerful words of Levin’s The Child Dreams. Hanoch Levin was one of the most respected and adored writers of his generation. While well known in Israel and Europe, due to a lack of translations, Levin’s many works remain not often produced in the United States. Levin’s reflections about war in The Child Dreams focus on the existential dilemmas relevant to us through an abstract world filled with pure realism. His plays, though socio/political and oft abstract in location, allow us to look through the eyes of the familiar, such as a mother and child. With the expertise of our native
Israeli director/theatre artist Ronit Muskatblit, we are interested
in a November 2006 production of The Child Dreams in New York. Translated by Dr.Karen Alkalay-Gut. The cast includes michael billingsley*,
beth manspeizer, chantel lucier, Performance: February 21st @ 7pm.
Israeli playwright and director Hanoch Levin
was one of the most original and innovative writers of his generation.
Born in Tel Aviv in 1943, Levin is familiar within the Israeli cultural
context, but there are few resources on his work available outside
of Israel.
